HOW CAN YOU JUDGE ANOTHER?

FIRST STONE ANYONE?

Beautifully put! You might well add one of the three main principles of Carl Rogers’ Person-Centred Approach is empathy, the ability to see the world from another person’s standpoint – it’s empowering for all concerned!

“When someone really hears you without passing judgment on you, without taking responsibility for you, without trying to mold you, it feels damn good.  When I have been listened to, when I have been heard, I am able to re-perceive my world in a new way and go on. It is astonishing how elements that seem insoluble become soluble when someone listens. How confusions that seem irremediable become relatively clear flowing streams when one is heard.”

    • Wow – thanks mate – I’ll follow this up – it sounds exactly what I’m getting at.
Cheers for your perspicacity and love.
      How are you doing?

I am also a Carl Rogers Fan…based my whole career on it. To me, the counselor needs to put any preconcepts aside and accept each person as they are and move on from there.

    • Hi to 5kidsw – Carl Rogers is a new name to me – I made the above post up because it expressed my own feelings on this important subject. It’s very nice to find that there is an acual approach using this perspective. Bill above has given me some links so I’m in the process of learning more.
      Thanks for getting involved 🙂

You’re more than welcome – in common with 5kidsw, Carl Rogers seems to have become a lifetime project for me, so I can’t wait to see how your explorations go 🙂

      • I just love it when you do something, and I’m not sure what prompted me to make the post at all, leads to unforeseen mind-changing possibilities.
I’ll keep you informed of my thoughts on this and related subjects 🙂

        I shall watch with awe!

“People are just as wonderful as sunsets if I can let them be… When I look at a sunset, I don’t find myself saying, ‘Soften the orange a bit on the right hand corner’… I don’t try to control a sunset. I watch with awe as it unfolds.” (Carl Rogers)

      • Aw shucks!
As they say in cartoons 🙂
Lovely quote mate – I fully agree, that’s why I’m pushing the equal but different line.
I won’t buy the idea that some of us are better than others.
I was thinking of adding re Carl R that when I was teaching a class for a year I didn’t even try to teach as such for a couple of weeks. What’s most important is to assist everyone to feel good about themselves and valued as a member of the group. And to give as much power away to the class, so they understand I’m just one of the group, and I just know stuff – the real work is for them. Once a class has bonded they keep in touch with each other afterwards as well.
If that goes okay then learning is easy and fun 😉
I’m saying this now before I read any stuff 😉

Which as about as good a summary of Rogers’ Freedom to Learn as there is – happy reading 🙂

      • I could feel it from your quotes 🙂
        Should be fun then…
